About Playa Puerta del Mar
Puerta del Mar is sociable, convenient and closely tied to everyday town life. Families, groups of friends and regular swimmers use the beach, while the promenade remains active with walkers and cafe visitors. The central position makes it easy to combine several hours on the shore with the old town.
Municipal information gives the beach a length of roughly 1.14 kilometres and an average width of fifty metres. The Rio Verde divides the frontage, and the section nearer Velilla is commonly known as Fuentepiedra. Seasonal services, accessible entrances and water activity hire support a conventional beach day.

The Setting
Playa Puerta del Mar is a central Almunecar beach extending beside the Paseo del Altillo and the modern town centre. Its long dark sand-and-gravel shore, calm-looking water and immediate access to shops, restaurants and historic streets make it one of the municipality's most popular urban beaches.
The name Puerta del Mar recalls one of the old entrances to Almunecar and the historic eastern anchorage near today's Paseo del Altillo. From the thirteenth century, this area served as an important harbour approach to the town.
Almunecar's historical centre lies immediately inland, with the Castillo de San Miguel, archaeological remains and streets built over a settlement more than three thousand years old. Restaurants serve fish, tapas and local produce from the subtropical valleys.
Dark sand and gravel form a broad urban shoreline backed by the promenade, palms and mid-rise buildings. The river mouth interrupts the beach and adds a changing strip of water and sediment between the two main sections.
To the west, the coast approaches the old town and San Cristobal; eastward, it continues towards Velilla. The sea horizon remains open despite the central setting. Puerta del Mar's identity comes from direct connection: town streets, former harbour entrance, river and modern beach all occupy the same active waterfront. The Paseo del Altillo is one of the town's established meeting places, especially in the evening. From the western end, visitors can continue towards La Caletilla and the castle headland without needing a car.
