Playa Cotobro

Cotobro feels contained and residential. Visitors from nearby apartments and hotels gather along a shore only a few metres wide in places, while restaurants and terraces sit close behind the promenade. The beach can become busy because usable space is limited, but the mood remains relaxed.

The mixed surface is firm and coarse, and stones collect near parts of the waterline. Municipal tourism describes the water as generally calm and clear. Cotobro works best for straightforward bathing, a meal beside the sea or a walk along the western coastline rather than large-scale sports or entertainment.

Playa Cotobro is a narrow urban beach west of central Almunecar, between Punta de San Jose and Penon del Lobo. Its dark sand, gravel and rounded stones, calm-looking water and residential promenade give it a quieter family character than the larger beaches around San Cristobal.

The old Camino de los Pescadores continues west towards La Herradura, providing a walking connection with the more rugged coast. At the opposite end, San Cristobal, the Castillo de San Miguel and central Almunecar remain within easy reach.

Restaurants around Cotobro serve fish, rice and Mediterranean dishes, while Almunecar's subtropical valleys contribute mango, avocado and custard apple. A Roman bridge inland from Cotobro adds another reminder of the area's long-settled landscape.

The beach extends for roughly 338 metres but averages only about seventeen metres wide. Dark sand, gravel, bolos and callaos form the shore below villas, apartments and a narrow seafront road.

Rocky points define each end, and the hills rise quickly behind the buildings. Westward, the coast becomes increasingly broken towards El Muerto and La Herradura; eastward, San Cristobal's broader urban frontage returns. Cotobro's visual appeal comes from compression: steep residential slopes, a thin dark beach and clear water held within a small Mediterranean bay. The promenade is short but useful for an evening walk, and the residential setting keeps traffic and daily life close. At the western edge, rocky ground marks the beginning of the route towards the quieter Playa del Muerto.
