About Playa de Castell
The beach feels spacious and informal, attracting families, walkers, paddlers and visitors following the coastal path. It can become busy in summer, particularly near the main access, but the absence of hotels and apartment blocks keeps the atmosphere grounded in the landscape.
The sea is open and conditions vary with wind and swell. Swimmers should follow seasonal flags and remain alert to currents, especially away from supervised areas. The beach is large enough for walking, games and a full day, though shade on the sand is limited.

The Setting
Platja de Castell is a broad natural beach east of Palamos, protected from urban development after a long local campaign. Golden sand, pine forest and the open Mediterranean create one of the Costa Brava's most valued undeveloped coastal settings.
The Iberian settlement on the eastern headland is the strongest historical anchor. Archaeological remains occupy the rocky point above the beach and show that this strategic bay was used long before modern tourism.
Palamos lies to the west, while the cami de ronda continues east towards Cala Estreta and the Cap Roig coast. Nearby farmland and pine woods form part of the protected surroundings, reinforcing the sense that Castell belongs to a wider natural corridor.
A broad crescent of sand lies between rocky headlands, backed by low dunes, wet ground and pine forest. A seasonal watercourse reaches the beach and may alter the central shore after rain. Visitors should avoid trampling fenced vegetation or sensitive restoration areas.
The eastern headland divides Castell from smaller rocky inlets, while the western side leads towards La Fosca through coastal woodland. The beach faces open sea and receives strong light for most of the day.
Castell is remarkable not because it is empty, but because a large accessible beach has remained free of dense development. Its scale, archaeological headland and forest backdrop create a complete coastal landscape only a short distance from the working town of Palamos. Allow time to explore beyond the central sand.
