Playa las Canas

Las Canas feels open, peaceful and relatively isolated. The beach extends for roughly 600 metres but averages only around twenty metres wide, allowing visitors to spread lengthwise along the shore. Even during summer, it is usually less crowded than the urban beaches farther west.

The dark surface includes sand and coarser material, and footwear can be useful near stony sections. Access is from the coastal road and nearby paths, with few commercial services once visitors reach the beach. The simplicity appeals to people seeking space, although they should bring water, shade and other essentials. Anglers and walkers are often more noticeable here than organised holiday groups.

Playa Las Canas is a long, lightly developed beach in Sorvilan municipality, close to Melicena on Granada's eastern coast. Its dark sand, low visitor numbers and limited facilities make it a quiet shore for walking and simple bathing rather than a conventional resort day.

Melicena is the nearest coastal village for basic services, restaurants and a stronger fishing atmosphere. Sorvilan's municipal centre lies much higher inland on the Sierra de la Contraviesa, linking the coast with vineyards, almonds, figs and traditional mountain farming.

The route along this shore has always been constrained by steep slopes and ravines. Small settlements, watch sites and the coastal road occupy the narrow usable ground between mountain and sea, creating a different pattern from the broad plains around Motril.

A thin strip of dark sand and gravel follows an open Mediterranean frontage below dry, sharply rising hills. Development is sparse, with the N-340 corridor and scattered buildings visible above or behind parts of the shore.

Melicena lies close by, while smaller roadside beaches continue towards Los Yesos and Playa Bonita. The coast has few broad bays, so the horizon remains open and the beach is shaped by storms and seasonal movement of material. Las Canas is defined by length, narrowness and the close presence of the Contraviesa slopes. The absence of a continuous promenade strengthens the sense of distance from larger resorts.
