About Playa a Mourisca

The Vibe

The beach feels quiet and residential. Its narrow profile discourages the large groups found at Samil, so most visitors are local swimmers, walkers and people seeking a place beside the water. At low tide, A Mourisca becomes easier to use and invites a slow walk along the shore; at high tide, dry sand may be scarce.

This is not a beach for extensive equipment. It is better suited to a short swim in appropriate conditions, sunbathing when the tide allows or linking several Alcabre coves on foot. The rocks and shifting waterline require more awareness than a broad, uniform urban strand.

The Setting

About

A Mourisca is a long but very narrow beach in Vigo's parish of Alcabre. It stretches along a rocky section of the Ria de Vigo between Fontes and Santa Baia, creating a slim ribbon of sand whose character changes dramatically with the tide.

The Local Anchor

Alcabre is the defining community. The parish sits between Vigo's central waterfront and the great beaches farther west, with a coastline shaped by fishing traditions, small landing places and residential growth.

The Museo do Mar de Galicia lies close by and provides valuable context for the ria outside. Its focus on marine ecosystems, fishing and coastal society helps explain the working boats, shellfish culture and maritime landscape visible from A Mourisca. Samil is within walking distance in the opposite direction.

The Landscape

A Mourisca extends for around 160 metres but may be only a few metres wide. Sand lies against a settled shoreline, broken by granite and backed by vegetation, walls and paths.

The view opens across the Ria de Vigo towards the Morrazo peninsula. Small craft and larger vessels pass through the wider water, while the Cies Islands are visible towards the ria mouth from parts of the coast. The beach is protected from direct Atlantic swell, though wind can still produce uneven water.

Low tide is when the place reveals most detail, exposing rock pools, intertidal textures and a broader strip for walking. Higher water can divide or nearly cover sections of sand. A Mourisca's identity comes from this tidal fragility: it is a beach that must be visited on the sea's terms.
