About Playa Tombo do Gato
The beach is friendly, convenient and often busy on warm days. Families and local swimmers value its manageable size, while walkers arrive from Samil or continue towards Fontes, A Mourisca and Santa Baia. The cove feels more intimate than the large beach next door, but it is not isolated from urban life.
Tombo do Gato works well for a short swim, a few hours on the sand or a pause during a coastal walk. Its compact scale means space becomes limited quickly at high tide or during peak summer periods. Visitors seeking a quieter experience may find early morning or later afternoon more comfortable.

The Setting
Tombo do Gato is a compact beach on Vigo's Alcabre shoreline, immediately north of Samil. It sits within a sequence of small coves and rocky points, offering a more contained beach experience while remaining connected to the city's popular seafront by paths and nearby streets.
Alcabre provides the local identity. This western Vigo parish combines residential streets with a deeply indented shoreline of beaches, rock shelves and old maritime connections. Samil is close enough to supply the energy of a major urban beach, while the Museo do Mar lies farther along the coast.
The footpath network is an important part of the visit. Tombo do Gato is one link in a walk that reveals how quickly Vigo's waterfront changes from broad sand to small coves and harbour edges.
The beach forms a short crescent between rocky boundaries. Pale sand occupies the centre, with vegetation and urban paths behind it. The water faces across the Ria de Vigo towards Morrazo, and the Cies Islands remain visible towards the Atlantic entrance.
Tide has a strong effect on the amount of usable sand. Low water opens the cove and exposes more of the rock shelves; high water creates a narrower strip and brings swimmers closer to the edges. Although the ria moderates direct ocean swell, wind can still produce chop.
Tombo do Gato's appeal comes from contrast. It delivers a genuine small-cove atmosphere only minutes from Samil's broad promenade, making it one of the clearest examples of Vigo's varied urban coastline.
