About Nice
Nice is the Riviera’s great city beach: a sweep of blue water and pale pebbles beneath the Promenade des Anglais, where swimming, walking, food, art and travel all meet on the same seafront. It is not a sandy resort in the usual sense — Nice is famous for its smooth galets, so water shoes can make swimming and getting in and out of the sea much easier.
The Vibe
The mood is lively, elegant and unmistakably urban. Nice is not a hidden beach escape; it is a city-beach destination with the sea on one side and one of the Mediterranean’s great promenades on the other. Mornings are best for calmer water, cooler air and a more local rhythm, with swimmers, walkers and cyclists using the front before the day becomes busier. By afternoon, the beach feels more social, with visitors moving between public beach sections, private beach terraces, the old town and the cafés behind the seafront. The beach itself is pebble rather than soft sand, which changes the experience. It is less about sandcastles and more about clear water, deep colour, easy swimming days and long views across the Baie des Anges. Families can still enjoy it, but it suits confident swimmers and visitors who are comfortable with a steeper, stonier shoreline. For many people, the pleasure of Nice is the mix: a swim in the Mediterranean, lunch in Vieux Nice, an evening walk along the Promenade, and no need to leave the city.

The Setting
The Local Anchor
The Promenade des Anglais is the anchor of Nice. It gives the beach its shape and its rhythm, running beside the bay with palms, hotels, cyclists, runners and people simply watching the light on the water. Behind it, Vieux Nice, Cours Saleya, the markets, museums and Niçois food culture give the beach day much more depth than a simple seaside stop. Nice also works as a Riviera base. Monaco is an easy coastal train journey away, while Villefranche-sur-Mer, Beaulieu-sur-Mer, Èze, Menton and the Italian border all sit along the same eastbound corridor. By road, the A8 “La Provençale” gives fast access across the Côte d’Azur, cutting inland above the coast toward Monaco, Menton and Italy, or west toward Antibes, Cannes and beyond. That makes Nice practical as well as beautiful: a place where visitors can swim in the morning, explore the Riviera in the afternoon, and return to the city for dinner. Good to know: Nice is one of the easiest Riviera cities to reach without a taxi. From Nice Côte d’Azur Airport, Tram Line 2 runs from Terminals 1 and 2 towards the city, making it the sensible choice for most visitors heading to the Promenade des Anglais. Taxis are convenient but can feel expensive for a short city transfer, so use the tram if you can. In the old town, Cours Saleya is the famous flower and food market at the heart of Vieux Nice. The flower market runs from Tuesday to Sunday and is one of the classic Riviera morning stops, with produce, flowers, cafes and old-town streets all close together.
The Landscape
The setting is grand rather than secluded: blue Mediterranean water, pale pebbles, palms, Belle Époque hotels, Castle Hill and the long curve of the Baie des Anges. The shoreline is open, so conditions can change with wind direction and Mediterranean swell. A calm morning can become choppier later in the day, especially when afternoon breezes arrive. The landscape also explains the character of the beach. Nice does not have the soft sandy feel of some other Mediterranean resorts; its identity is built around pebbles, clear water and the dramatic meeting of city, mountains and sea. Looking east, the coast tightens toward Villefranche, Cap Ferrat, Monaco and Menton. Looking west, the bay opens toward the airport, Antibes and Cannes. That sense of movement is part of the appeal: Nice is both a beach and a gateway, a place to stay, swim, eat, walk and travel from.
