Porto-Vecchio

Porto-Vecchio is one of southern Corsica’s strongest beach bases because the town itself is only half the story. The old town sits above the harbour with restaurants, shops and evening life, while the coastline around it leads to some of the island’s most photographed beaches: Palombaggia, Santa Giulia, Tamaricciu and a wider run of pale sand, umbrella pines, granite rocks and clear shallow water that makes this corner of Corsica feel almost tropical.

The Vibe

The vibe is scenic, stylish and family-friendly, with a lively summer layer. Porto-Vecchio suits visitors who want beautiful water by day and a real town by evening — swimming, snorkelling in calm areas, boat trips, beach lunches, sunset drives, and combining the coast with inland Corsica towards Bonifacio, the Alta Rocca mountains or quieter coves.

The Local Anchor

The anchor is contrast: old stone streets and marina life in town, then some of the Mediterranean’s most beautiful beaches a short drive away. It is a base built for choice — one day a famous beach, the next a boat trip, a mountain road or a quieter village lunch.

The Landscape

Porto-Vecchio is best treated as a scenic beach hub rather than a single strip of sand. Santa Giulia is known for its lagoon-like bay, long beach and shallow water, ideal for families and relaxed swimming; Palombaggia brings the postcard image — fine sand, pine trees, pink-toned rocks and views towards the Cerbicale Islands. These beaches are beautiful, but they are not secret: in July and August the access roads, parking and beach restaurants get very busy, so timing matters. And the water that looks calm at Santa Giulia can be much rougher on exposed stretches — check the wind direction, UV and bathing advice on the day.
