Playa Xastelas

The beach feels open, spacious and closely connected to nature. Families often use the more accessible sections, while walkers continue along the shoreline and surrounding trails. Even when the main access is busy, the length of the sand makes it possible to find a calmer stretch.

Xastelas is classed as an open beach, but it lies well inside the Ria de Arousa rather than on the exposed Atlantic coast. The water can look gentle in settled weather, although wind and changing tide still matter. Visitors should follow local signs, protect the dunes and avoid disturbing feeding or resting birds.

Xastelas is a 750-metre beach on the southern side of A Illa de Arousa, within the protected landscape of O Carreiron. Fine sand, low dunes and a broad estuary view make it one of the island's largest natural beaches. It is reached through the Carreiron area, where roads give way to paths and the coast becomes quieter.

O Carreiron is the defining local anchor. The protected peninsula contains beaches, pine woodland, dune habitat, salt-influenced ground and birdlife within a compact walking area. Once inside, much of the exploration is on foot, creating a break from the more settled parts of A Illa.

The island's bridge and main road are only a short distance away, yet Xastelas feels removed from traffic. The fishing port of O Xufre and the island centre provide the cultural contrast: one side of A Illa is built around working maritime life, while this southern edge is valued for habitat and open space.

Fine sand runs in a long sweep beside shallow-looking estuary water. Low dunes and vegetation form the backdrop, with paths leading towards smaller coves around the peninsula. Across the ria, the O Grove and Cambados side of the estuary shapes the distant horizon.

The tide changes the scale of the beach dramatically. Low water reveals a broad intertidal margin, while high water draws visitors closer to the dune line. The landscape is gentle rather than dramatic, but its ecological variety gives it depth. Xastelas is best appreciated slowly, combining time on the sand with a respectful walk through the wider Carreiron landscape.
