About Playa de Poniente
Poniente feels spacious, lively and less enclosed than the smaller beaches around the castle. Families gather near accessible entrances, walkers and runners use the promenade and swimmers spread along a frontage extending for more than a kilometre. The length allows quieter positions towards the outer sections even during busy summer periods.
The shore combines sand with fine gravel and can change profile after windy weather. Mediterranean conditions are often manageable, though waves may become more noticeable across the open bay. Seasonal services, sports areas and nearby restaurants make the beach practical for a complete day.

The Setting
Playa de Poniente forms Aguilas's long western urban bay beyond La Colonia and below the residential seafront. Its broad sand-and-gravel shore, continuous promenade and generous scale make it one of the town's principal beaches for families, exercise and everyday coastal life.
The Castillo de San Juan remains visible towards the eastern end and helps orient visitors along the bay. La Colonia and the town centre lie beyond it, while the seafront continues west towards La Casica Verde and the less urban coast.
Aguilas's history of fishing, mineral exports and railway development is reflected in the harbour, old industrial landmarks and local museums. Chiringuitos and neighbourhood restaurants serve grilled fish, rice, shellfish and dishes shaped by the Murcian coast.
Golden-grey sand and gravel follow a broad south-facing curve beneath palms, promenade gardens, apartments and public facilities. The upper beach is wide enough for open walking space, games and seasonal installations without hiding the sea.
Eastward, urban landmarks become denser around La Colonia and the castle. Westward, development gradually loosens towards Casica Verde and Matalentisco. Dry hills rise behind Aguilas, while the bay holds a wide Mediterranean horizon. Poniente is defined by scale and continuity: a long civic waterfront connecting town, sport, restaurants and open beach. The western promenade also provides frequent seating and open views, making the bay useful for year-round walking even when the water is too unsettled for comfortable swimming.
