About Playa del Gurugu

The Vibe

Gurugu is best suited to visitors who value space and a simple day by the sea. The beach rarely feels as concentrated as Benicarlo's small urban cove, and its extended shoreline attracts walkers, anglers and people looking for an uncomplicated place to sit near the water. Summer services add convenience without turning the beach into a highly organised resort.

The seabed and shoreline can feel firmer than a fine-sand family beach, particularly where pebbles gather at the waterline. Wind and swell are more noticeable on this open section, so bathing decisions should follow flags and local guidance. Suitable footwear helps when moving across gravel or entering the sea.

The Setting

About

Playa del Gurugu is a long, relatively narrow beach on the southern side of Benicarlo, linking the compact town beaches with the coast towards Peniscola. Its mix of sand and rounded gravel, open exposure and modest level of development give it a quieter character than nearby Morrongo.

The Local Anchor

Benicarlo's fishing port lies to the north beyond Morrongo, while the coastal road continues south towards Peniscola. That position gives Gurugu a useful in-between identity: close to restaurants and town services, yet removed from the busiest harbour and promenade areas.

The municipality is strongly associated with fishing and the Benicarlo artichoke, both of which shape its markets and seasonal food culture. Visitors can therefore combine a quiet beach visit with the old centre, port restaurants or local produce without expecting those attractions directly behind the sand.

The Landscape

Gurugu forms a long, low strip between the Mediterranean and the coastal road. Sand, shingle and occasional rock create more texture than the smoother beaches farther south, while the uninterrupted horizon keeps the setting open.

There are no dramatic cliffs or enclosing headlands. The visual character comes from distance: a linear shore, the outline of Peniscola farther along the coast and the gradual transition back towards Benicarlo. It is a beach shaped by movement along the shoreline rather than a single focal landmark, making it particularly appealing for long walks outside the hottest part of the day.
