Playa del Nord

The southern end is lively and highly serviced, with families, water-sport users and promenade walkers sharing the shore beneath the castle. Farther north, the beach becomes broader and the historic centre feels more distant, allowing visitors to choose between intense resort activity and a quieter section of the same continuous strand.

The gentle profile is attractive for paddling, but conditions still vary with wind and swell. Flags, lifeguard instructions and marked channels should guide swimming. The long promenade provides frequent access to shade, food and accommodation, yet the open sand itself can become very hot during the afternoon.

Playa Norte is Peniscola's famous five-and-a-half-kilometre beach, beginning below the fortified old town and running north along Avenida Papa Luna towards Benicarlo. Fine sand, shallow-looking water and uninterrupted views of the castle make it one of the most recognisable urban beaches on the Costa del Azahar.

The Castle of Papa Luna dominates the southern view. The fortress was built by the Knights Templar at the end of the thirteenth century and later became the residence of Benedict XIII, whose association with Peniscola remains central to the town's story.

Below the walls, the old town occupies a rocky headland linked to the mainland by a narrow low strip. The fishing port and Playa Sur lie on the opposite side, while Playa Norte follows the long resort frontage north. This geography explains why the castle appears suspended between two very different beaches.

Playa Norte is a long, gently curving sweep of pale sand with the Mediterranean ahead and a continuous promenade behind. The castle provides a dramatic fixed point at one end, while the horizon opens towards Benicarlo at the other.

Few beaches combine such extensive bathing space with such a powerful architectural backdrop. Morning light strikes the fortress from across the bay, and evening brings walkers back to the waterline as the stone walls change colour. The landscape is unmistakably urban, yet the scale of sand and sea prevents the buildings from overwhelming the view.
