About Playa Melide

The Vibe

The mood is natural, breezy and more adventurous than at the inner-ria beaches. Walkers often reach Melide while exploring Cabo Home, and the beach attracts people who enjoy a less developed coastline. Surf can be part of its character, but changing sea conditions mean swimming requires more caution than at a sheltered bay. On calm days the fine sand and clear-looking water are highly inviting; on rougher days the better experience may be a shoreline walk, a picnic beneath the pines or simply watching the Atlantic.

The Setting

About

Melide is a 250-metre fine-sand beach at Cabo Home, on the outer edge of the O Hio parish in Cangas de Morrazo. Unlike the sheltered beaches inside the rias, this is an open Atlantic shore with greater exposure to wind and waves. It sits within the protected Costa da Vela landscape, surrounded by pine woodland and close to the cape's lighthouses. Visitors come as much for the setting and views as for time on the sand.

The Local Anchor

Cabo Home is the defining local anchor. Its cluster of lighthouses, headlands and walking tracks occupies the western tip of the Morrazo peninsula, where the land faces the Cies Islands across a narrow stretch of sea. The routes around Punta Robaleira, Punta Subrido and the main lighthouse create an excellent extension to a beach visit. Hio village and the Castro do Facho area add further interest inland, while Cangas provides the nearest larger centre for food and practical services.

The Landscape

Melide lies in a shallow bay framed by rocky points, pine trees and low coastal slopes. The Cies Islands appear remarkably close from this side of the peninsula, dominating the seaward view and giving the beach a strong sense of position at the entrance to the Ria de Vigo. Fine sand contrasts with dark granite and deep green woodland, while the open orientation keeps the horizon bright and changeable. It is a compact beach in a much larger landscape, shaped by cape, islands and Atlantic weather.
