Playa Guardias Viejas

Guardias Viejas is one of the calmer beaches in the municipality. Visitors come for space, walking and a less commercial atmosphere, while local families use the easier access points near the settlement. The long frontage rarely feels compressed, even during the main summer period.

The surface is coarser than a fine-sand resort beach and can include gravel and pebbles near the waterline. Wind and open exposure are part of the setting, so the beach changes character noticeably from still mornings to breezier afternoons. Facilities are more limited than at Levante or Poniente Almerimar.

Playa Guardias Viejas stretches along a quiet section of the El Ejido coast between the village of Guardias Viejas and Balerma. Its mixed sand-and-pebble shore, open water and nearby eighteenth-century castle create a more local and rugged experience than the highly serviced beaches around Almerimar.

The Castillo de Guardias Viejas stands on a rocky rise close to the sea. Built during the reign of Carlos III in the eighteenth century, it formed part of the coastal defence network against pirates and corsairs. It was damaged during the Peninsular War and rebuilt in 1817, preserving a strong military presence above the shore.

The surrounding coast also retains links with fishing and small-scale maritime activity. Balerma, farther west, remains closely identified with its seafaring traditions, while Almerimar and its marina lie to the east.

The beach follows a long, open line beneath the dry coastal plain of El Ejido. Sand, gravel and darker pebbles form the shore, with low development around Guardias Viejas and extensive greenhouse agriculture visible farther inland.

Offshore seagrass meadows add ecological importance to this section of coast, and low-impact moorings have been introduced to reduce damage from anchoring. The castle, open water and pale agricultural plain create an unusual combination. Guardias Viejas is neither a remote natural beach nor a full resort frontage; it is a quiet working landscape where defence history, marine habitat and modern cultivation meet the Mediterranean.
