About Playa Illetes

The Vibe

The beach combines natural beauty with high summer demand. Day visitors, families, boat passengers and yacht crews share the shore, especially near the southern access points and restaurants. Walking farther north normally creates a greater sense of space, although the whole peninsula can feel busy during peak holiday periods.

The water is often clear and gently shelving, but wind, currents and boat traffic still require attention. Swimmers should respect marked channels and avoid attempting the crossing to Espalmador, where currents can be dangerous despite the apparently short distance. Dune fencing and boardwalks must be used because the peninsula is narrow and vulnerable to erosion.

The Setting

About

Ses Illetes occupies the western side of the narrow Es Trucadors peninsula in northern Formentera, within the Ses Salines Natural Park. Fine pale sand, shallow turquoise water and views towards Espalmador have made it the island's most celebrated beach.

The Local Anchor

Ses Illetes forms part of the protected Ses Salines landscape shared by Formentera and Ibiza. Behind the beach lie dunes, salt-related wetlands and the remains of a working landscape shaped by evaporation ponds and old routes.

Motor vehicles are controlled during the main season, and entry to the natural park by car or motorbike normally involves a fee and capacity limits. Walking and cycling access is encouraged, while buses and seasonal boat services provide alternatives. These controls are part of protecting the site rather than an ordinary parking arrangement.

The Landscape

The beach runs along a slender arm of sand with the Mediterranean visible on both sides in the northern sections. Small offshore islets give Ses Illetes its name, while Espalmador appears close beyond the tip of Es Trucadors.

Sand colour and water depth create the famous bands of pale blue, but the wider landscape matters just as much: dunes, low juniper, salt flats and open horizon. Ses Illetes is best experienced by moving beyond the first access point and observing the peninsula as a whole, not simply as a single photograph of clear water.
