The Local Anchor

Watching over this modern scene is the stoic Sohail Castle, a formidable anchor to a deep and layered past. Perched on a small hill at the river's mouth, its stones tell tales of Moorish emirs and Christian Reconquista knights. Built in 956 by Abd-ar-Rahman III to defend the coast, its silhouette is a timeless feature of the landscape. The castle grounds now host vibrant concerts and festivals, a beautiful collision of ancient history and contemporary celebration. Below its ramparts, the scent of grilling sardines—the iconic espetos—drifts from the beach, a culinary tradition as old and essential to this coast as the fortress itself.

The Landscape

Fuengirola’s coastline is a magnificent, uninterrupted sweep of fine, dark sand stretching for nearly eight kilometres. The beach is a broad, generous expanse, meeting the gentle Mediterranean in a calm, inviting embrace. This golden ribbon is backed by the elegant promenade, the true heart of the town. To the west, the landscape finds its dramatic crescendo where the Fuengirola River meets the sea, and the castle rises 38 metres above the water, a commanding and beautiful focal point that guards the shore as it has for over a millennium.
