Playa Cala Mesquida

The atmosphere is relaxed but exposed. Local families, residents and visitors from Mao use the sand, while walkers follow the coast and slopes around the bay. Development remains modest enough for the beach to feel tied to its natural setting rather than dominated by a promenade.

An easterly breeze can send waves directly into the bay, even when nearby coves appear settled. The southern rocky end and the area around moored boats require extra awareness, while the sandy centre offers the most straightforward entry. After rough weather, the waterline may change noticeably as sand, pebbles and seagrass are redistributed.

Cala Mesquida is a sandy bay northeast of Mao, framed by low hills, a small coastal settlement and the historic Torre de sa Mesquida. Its open eastern outlook and broader beach distinguish it from the narrow limestone inlets farther south around Canutells and Binidali.

Torre de sa Mesquida stands on the southern side of the bay. The defensive tower recalls the strategic importance of Menorca's approaches during periods of British, French and Spanish control, and gives the beach a strong historical silhouette.

Mao is close enough to combine with the coast. Its long natural harbour, market and Georgian-influenced streets provide a very different setting from the low houses of Sa Mesquida. The Cami de Cavalls also passes through the wider area, connecting the bay with the island's eastern headlands.

A generous band of pale sand curves beneath scrub-covered slopes. The tower, scattered homes and rounded headlands create a broad composition with more open horizon than many Menorcan calas.

The bay faces the morning light and can look intensely bright before midday. The sandy approach also gives non-swimmers an easy place to watch changing weather over the eastern horizon. Rocky patches add interest near the sides, while the central beach remains visually simple. Cala Mesquida's identity comes from the meeting of open eastern sea, accessible sand and a watchtower landscape that still feels separate from nearby Mao.
