About Playa de Ponent

The Vibe

Ponent is generally quieter than Mataro's larger central beaches, making it useful for visitors who prefer a straightforward local setting. Families, walkers and regular swimmers share the shore, while the nearby port keeps boats, masts and maritime movement in view.

The beach is exposed enough for wind and wave conditions to change through the day. Swimmers should remain within the marked bathing area and follow flags, especially where currents and harbour structures influence the water. The atmosphere is practical rather than glamorous, with the town and transport links close behind.

The Setting

About

Platja de Ponent is Mataro's westernmost designated bathing beach, set beside the port and close to the edge of the neighbouring Cabrera de Mar coast. It offers a compact urban shoreline where sand, harbour infrastructure and the city's seafront promenade meet.

The Local Anchor

The Port of Mataro provides the immediate anchor. It combines leisure sailing, fishing activity, restaurants and a waterfront route that links Ponent with the busier beaches to the east. Walking around the harbour helps place the beach within the wider city shoreline.

Mataro's historic centre lies inland, with the Basilica of Santa Maria, market streets and architecture from the city's industrial and Modernista periods. The Nau Gaudi, one of Antoni Gaudi's earliest surviving works, is another distinctive stop between the railway and centre.

The Landscape

Ponent sits on a relatively straight section of the Maresme coast. The harbour breakwaters shape the eastern view, while the western horizon opens towards a less urban stretch and the low hills behind Cabrera de Mar.

The railway runs close to the seafront, a familiar feature along this coast. Sand depth and width can vary with storms and coastal works, so the beach may feel different from one season to another.

Its interest comes from contrast rather than seclusion: open Mediterranean water in front, working and leisure boats beside it, and a substantial Catalan city immediately behind. Ponent is well suited to a shorter beach visit combined with the port promenade or Mataro's cultural centre.
