About Playa del Callao
Callao has a lively local rhythm throughout the bathing season and remains part of daily seafront life in cooler months. Families gather near the main entrances, walkers and runners use the seafront path, and summer services make it easy to spend several hours beside the water. It is active without feeling as concentrated around the port as Varador.
The sand is generally coarse, typical of the Maresme coast, and the seabed can deepen more quickly than on very shallow resort beaches. Waves vary with wind and swell, so swimmers should pay attention to flags and avoid assuming that a sunny day means calm water.

The Setting
Platja del Callao is a central Mataro beach between Sant Simo and Varador. Its broad sand, promenade access and position close to residential neighbourhoods make it a familiar everyday beach for the city rather than a purpose-built resort strip.
Mataro's seafront promenade is the immediate anchor, connecting Callao westward with Varador and the port and eastward with Sant Simo. This continuous route makes the beach useful for a coastal walk as well as for bathing.
Inland, Mataro offers a substantial historic centre. The Basilica of Santa Maria, the market area and Modernista buildings associated with architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch reveal a city shaped by commerce and textile industry, not only summer tourism.
Callao occupies a straight, open section of coast backed by promenade, railway and urban development. There are no cliffs or enclosing headlands, so the Mediterranean horizon feels wide and weather remains visible across the whole beach.
Storms can shift the profile of the shore and change the amount of dry sand. The transition to Sant Simo is gradual rather than marked by a dramatic natural boundary, while the port structures become increasingly prominent towards Varador.
The result is an honest urban beach landscape: sand and sea in the foreground, a working Catalan city behind, and a long coastal route linking the different characters of Mataro's waterfront.
