Playa Castillo de Macenas

Macenas has a spacious, elemental character. Visitors come for the scenery, walking and a quieter shoreline rather than for rows of facilities or a dense promenade. The surface is coarser underfoot than Mojacar's central sandy beaches, and the open position means wind and wave conditions can be more noticeable.

The beach rarely feels enclosed, even in summer. There is room to spread out along the long frontage, and the lack of a continuous urban backdrop keeps attention on the sea, the tower and the dry hills. It suits travellers who value landscape and space, while those expecting a fully equipped family resort should plan more carefully.

Playa Castillo de Macenas occupies a more exposed stretch of coast south of Mojacar's main resort area, beside the eighteenth-century defensive tower that gives the beach its name. Its mixed sand-and-pebble shore, open horizons and rugged surroundings create a markedly different experience from the serviced urban beaches farther north.

The Castillo de Macenas stands close to the shore as the clearest historic landmark. Built in the eighteenth century as part of the coastal defence network, its compact stone form reflects the period when watch posts and fortified towers monitored this exposed Mediterranean route. It remains the visual anchor for the entire beach.

Mojacar Pueblo rises inland to the north, linking the wild-looking coast with one of Almeria's best-known white villages. Food and supplies are easier to find back along Mojacar Playa, where local menus draw on fish from the nearby coast and produce from the dry interior.

The beach lies where the developed Mojacar strip begins to give way to a rougher coastline of low cliffs, gullies and volcanic-looking earth tones. Darker pebbles and coarse sand contrast with the blue water, while the Sierra Cabrera foothills create a dry, folded backdrop.

South of the tower, the coast continues towards smaller coves and walking routes around Sombrerico and the Chacona ridge. The result is a broad, austere landscape shaped more by geology and exposure than by planting or promenade design. Macenas feels close to Mojacar, but visually it already belongs to the wilder coast beyond the resort.
