About Playa de Les Roques
This is a place for a quieter stop rather than a large resort-style beach day. The available sand can be limited, particularly after storms or at higher water, and visitors often choose it for the setting, rock detail and local atmosphere as much as for swimming.
The cove's small scale means it can fill quickly. Footwear is useful around rough stone, and bathers should watch both wave conditions and submerged rock. There may be periods when erosion leaves very little comfortable dry sand, so the beach should be approached as a changing natural space rather than a guaranteed wide strand.

The Setting
Platja de les Roques is a small natural cove in Montgat, set below the town's coastal hill and beside the railway. Sand and exposed rock share a compact shoreline that feels very different from the broader engineered beaches found elsewhere in metropolitan Barcelona.
Montgat began as a fishing settlement and later became one of Barcelona's early seaside escapes, helped by the coastal railway. The old town, Montgat hill and nearby remnants of maritime life give the shoreline a stronger local identity than its proximity to the city might suggest.
The railway remains central to the landscape. Trains pass close behind the beach, linking Montgat quickly with Barcelona and other Maresme towns, but also emphasising how narrow the space is between infrastructure and sea.
Les Roques is geologically unusual within the Barcelona metropolitan coast. The cove contains an exposed outcrop of ancient igneous and metamorphic rock, giving the margins a darker, more textured appearance than the surrounding sandy beaches.
The beach is maintained carefully and has traditionally been treated as a natural cove rather than one regularly rebuilt with imported sand. Storms, wave direction and long-term erosion can therefore alter its shape noticeably.
From the shore, the view opens across the Mediterranean while the town rises behind the railway. Les Roques is memorable because it preserves a pocket of raw geology inside a densely used metropolitan coastline.
