About Playa Chancelas

The Vibe

The beach has a comfortable semiurban atmosphere. It is quieter than the best-known resort strands of the Rias Baixas but established enough for a straightforward family visit. Local residents, holidaymakers staying nearby and people exploring the Poio shoreline share the sand.

Chancelas suits swimming in suitable conditions, paddling and relaxed time beside the water. The cove is protected from much of the wind, though the tide still changes its character. Visitors can also move easily between Chancelas and the adjoining smaller beach, creating more variety than the main crescent suggests.

The Setting

About

Chancelas is a sheltered fine-sand beach on the Poio coast between Combarro and Samieira. Its half-shell curve faces the Ria de Pontevedra, with residential buildings, vegetation and a clear outlook towards Tambo Island.

The Local Anchor

Combarro is the nearest major cultural anchor. Its historic granite houses, waterfront horreos and narrow lanes sit a short distance east and provide one of Galicia's most distinctive village experiences.

Samieira lies west along the coast and brings a quieter parish setting of coves, houses and small maritime spaces. Chancelas stands between these two identities, combining convenient access with a less intensely visited shore.

The Landscape

The beach is a short crescent of fine pale sand, sheltered within the inner Ria de Pontevedra. Regional and local guides give slightly different measurements, but both describe a compact beach rather than a long open strand.

Residential development is visible behind the coast, balanced by trees and the broad water view. Tambo Island forms the main focal point across the ria, with wooded hills rising beyond it.

At lower tide, more sand and rock appear and the connection with Chancelas Pequena becomes clearer. Higher water tightens the cove and concentrates visitors nearer the back. The protected setting usually keeps waves modest, but wind, boat wash and changing tidal currents still matter.

Chancelas is appealing because it feels easy without losing its sense of place. The beach belongs clearly to the inhabited Poio shoreline, where small coves, villages and the island view repeat along the coastal road.
