About Playa Baltar
The atmosphere is lively, practical and strongly connected to both Portonovo and Sanxenxo. Families gather near the main entrances, walkers use the promenade throughout the day and nautical activity is often visible in the bay. Summer is busy, but the beach offers more room than the harbour coves.
Baltar suits a full, uncomplicated beach day. Food, accommodation and town streets are nearby, while the sheltered position often creates gentler water than at Montalvo or Major. Wind, tides and boat movements still matter, so visitors should follow the conditions rather than rely on the bay's calm appearance.

The Setting
Baltar is Portonovo's broad sheltered beach, curving for about 600 metres between the harbour side of town and Punta Vicaino. Fine sand, an urban promenade and comparatively protected water make it one of Sanxenxo's easiest beaches for families and visitors who want services close to the shore.
Portonovo's fishing port and marina define the western end. Boats, seafood restaurants and the working waterfront preserve a maritime identity that goes beyond tourism. Eastward, Punta Vicaino separates Baltar from Silgar and provides a green break between the two principal urban beaches.
The promenade links Portonovo with Sanxenxo along the waterfront. Canelinas and Canelas offer smaller alternatives beyond the harbour, while Silgar continues the urban beach sequence on the other side of the point.
Baltar forms a broad half-shell of fine sand inside the Ria de Pontevedra. The bay faces south, with the opposite shore and layered hills visible across the water. Harbour structures frame one side, while Punta Vicaino and its trees shape the other.
At low tide, the beach becomes wide and gently shelving, creating generous room for walking and play. Higher water brings the shoreline closer to the promenade but leaves a substantial central strand. The protected setting reduces direct Atlantic swell, although afternoon breeze can create short chop.
This is an urban landscape, yet the scale of the ria prevents it from feeling enclosed. Baltar's identity lies in the meeting of beach, promenade, harbour and headland: a busy civic shore that remains closely tied to the natural rhythm of tide and water.
