Playa Montalvo

The atmosphere is active but rarely cramped because the beach has room to absorb summer crowds. Families settle near the easier access points, while walkers and people seeking more space spread along the central and western sections. Wind and waves are more noticeable here than in the sheltered town bays.

Montalvo suits visitors who want a broad horizon, a long shoreline and the feeling of being on a proper open coast. Swimming depends on the day's conditions, and the water should be treated with more respect than at a protected inner-ria cove. The beach also rewards walks outside the busiest afternoon period.

Montalvo is a long open beach on the western side of Sanxenxo, extending for about 900 metres between granite headlands. Fine sand, a rural backdrop and direct exposure towards the outer Ria de Pontevedra give it a spacious, Atlantic character that contrasts sharply with Portonovo's compact urban beaches.

Punta Montalvo is the natural anchor. The headland and viewpoint help define the beach and provide a clear perspective along the coast towards Bascuas, Pragueira and the A Lanzada area.

Portonovo lies a short distance east, offering harbour life, restaurants and a denser resort atmosphere. Inland, the scattered homes and holiday accommodation of Montalvo and Aios retain a looser, more rural pattern. This makes the beach easy to reach without losing its sense of openness.

Montalvo is almost straight, with fine pale sand backed by low vegetation and gently rising land. The beach faces west and south-west, towards the mouth of the ria and the Atlantic islands. Ons is a strong presence on clear days, appearing beyond the broad water rather than behind a close headland.

Tide alters the width but not the essential scale of the strand. Even at higher water, Montalvo remains one of the municipality's substantial beaches. At lower water, the firm margin invites a long walk and the granite edges reveal pools and channels.

The open setting brings changing conditions. Summer mornings may feel calm, while afternoon wind can roughen the surface. That variation is part of Montalvo's identity: a large, accessible beach that still responds visibly to the Atlantic beyond the ria.
