About Playa Canelas - Sanxenxo

The Vibe

This is one of Portonovo's natural family beaches: large enough for a proper day on the sand, but still closely connected to the town. Summer brings a lively mix of residents, holidaymakers and children, especially near the main access points. Walking towards the western end usually creates more distance from the busiest sections.

The bay feels comfortable rather than remote. There is room for swimming when conditions suit, beach games and an unhurried walk along the waterline. Because Canelas is open to more wind and swell than the town's smaller sheltered coves, visitors should judge the sea on the day rather than assume calm water.

The Setting

About

Canelas is a 400-metre beach immediately west of Portonovo, shaped like a broad half-shell between the town and Punta Cabicastro. Fine sand, an open classification and a semiurban setting give it more space and sea exposure than nearby Canelinas, while shops and accommodation remain within easy reach.

The Local Anchor

Portonovo provides the everyday anchor, with its fishing harbour, marina and dense network of seafood restaurants a short walk away. The beach offers a softer edge to that active town, allowing visitors to move easily between the sand and the waterfront streets.

Punta Cabicastro defines the western side. The headland separates Canelas from the coves towards Paxarinas and Montalvo and gives the beach a clear natural boundary. A coastal walk in either direction shows how quickly Sanxenxo changes from urban shore to rocky point and open Atlantic-facing sand.

The Landscape

Canelas curves across fine pale sand, with low development and vegetation behind much of the beach. The water faces south-west into the Ria de Pontevedra, opening towards the outer ria and the Atlantic islands beyond.

At low tide, the shoreline broadens and the bay's crescent becomes especially clear. Higher water reduces the dry margin and brings beachgoers closer to the back. Rocks at the ends add pools and texture, but they also require care when wet.

The beach's appeal lies in balance. It has enough urban support for an uncomplicated day, enough length to feel spacious and enough exposure to retain a real coastal character. From the sand, Portonovo feels close without dominating the entire view.
