About Playa d'Es Codolar

The Vibe

The cove feels historic and intimate, with swimmers sharing the shore beneath one of the town's oldest quarters.

Space is limited, so the beach can fill quickly despite its modest dimensions. The water often looks clear and inviting, but depth increases rapidly and waves can rebound from the enclosed sides. This is not the easiest choice for very young children or uncertain swimmers when the sea is unsettled. Visitors should pay close attention to local flags and avoid climbing unstable rocks.

The Setting

About

Es Codolar is a small, steeply shelving beach tucked behind the walls of Vila Vella in Tossa de Mar. Its coarse sand and pebbles, compact size and close rocky boundaries create a very different atmosphere from the broad, busy frontage of Platja Gran.

The Local Anchor

The beach is reached through the old streets near Vila Vella and Sa Roqueta, Tossa's traditional fishermen's quarter. It once served as a natural landing place for small fishing boats, a role that explains both its name and its close relationship with the settlement above. Today the approach on foot is part of the appeal, passing stone walls and narrow lanes before the sea suddenly appears below.

Central Tossa's restaurants, museums and shops are only a short walk away, but no promenade separates the beach from its historic setting. Es Codolar therefore feels more like a hidden pocket within the town than a conventional urban resort beach.

The Landscape

The cove lies at the foot of the southern side of Vila Vella, beneath the Codolar tower and the descending fortifications. Rock walls frame the small crescent, while the open view looks south along a rugged section of coast. The dark stones and deepening blue water contrast sharply with the pale masonry above.

Because the beach is so confined, geology and architecture are experienced at close range. There is little visual distance between the waterline, the rock and the medieval town. Es Codolar's appeal does not depend on size or facilities; it comes from this rare compression of working maritime history, fortified landscape and a genuine bathing cove.
