About Playa Gran
The setting is dramatic, but the beach itself is practical and lively, serving families, day visitors, swimmers and people moving between the seafront and the old town.
In high summer the atmosphere is busy from morning into evening. Sunbeds, water activities, excursion boats and nearby restaurants create a full resort rhythm, while the promenade makes access straightforward. The shore can slope more quickly than a shallow lagoon beach, and moderate wave action is possible, so flags and lifeguard advice should guide swimming decisions.

The Setting
Platja Gran is Tossa de Mar's central beach and one of the most recognisable urban shores on the Costa Brava. Coarse golden sand curves across the main bay, with the medieval walls and towers of Vila Vella rising directly above its western end.
Everything important in central Tossa is close. The seafront links the modern town, the fishermen's quarter of Sa Roqueta and the entrances into Vila Vella. Behind the beach are cafes, hotels and streets leading towards shops and local services, making this the easiest Tossa beach for visitors without a car.
Vila Vella is more than a backdrop. Its fortified enclosure preserves the town's medieval identity and turns an ordinary swim into an encounter with one of Catalonia's most distinctive coastal views. Boat services from the bay also connect Tossa with nearby coves, reinforcing the town's long relationship with the sea.
The beach occupies the broadest part of Tossa's natural bay. To the west, the headland is crowned by stone walls, defensive towers and the old town; to the east, the coast continues towards Mar Menuda. Boats moored or drawn close to shore add movement to the view without obscuring the strong geological shape of the bay.
Although urban development stands immediately behind the sand, the surrounding hills remain green and steep. Platja Gran therefore never feels detached from the wider Costa Brava landscape. Its character comes from the close compression of beach, working waterfront, wooded slopes and historic stone, all visible within a short walk.
