Playa Gran

This is the social heart of the bay. Residents, day visitors, swimmers and people moving between seafront restaurants share the compact shore. It becomes busy in summer, and boats may occupy part of the water or beach, so visitors wanting extensive sand should look to larger beaches outside the centre.

Platja Gran works especially well for a short swim followed by time in the village. The surface underfoot is mixed and sometimes stony, making beach shoes useful. Wind can arrive quickly around Cap de Creus, and bathing conditions should be judged on the day rather than assumed from the sheltered-looking bay.

Platja Gran is Cadaques's central town beach, set directly on the curved harbourfront below the whitewashed village. Coarse sand, pebbles and small boats create a shoreline valued as much for its setting as for conventional beach comfort.

Cadaques itself is the anchor. Steep streets climb from the waterfront towards the Church of Santa Maria, whose terrace provides one of the finest views over tiled roofs and the harbour. Galleries, small shops and restaurants reflect the town's long association with artists and writers.

Portlligat lies beyond the northern side of the village and is closely linked to Salvador Dali, whose former home is now a museum. The connection is important, but Cadaques retains its own fishing-town identity through boats, stone lanes and houses shaped around the protected bay.

The beach is roughly 200 metres long and occupies the most central section of Cadaques harbour. Its coarse sand and stones reflect the geology of Cap de Creus, where wind and resistant rock create a harder, more angular coast than the broad sandy resorts farther south.

White buildings rise closely behind the promenade, while moored craft add colour and movement to the water. The bay feels enclosed by hills, yet tramuntana winds can still funnel through the landscape.

Platja Gran is best appreciated as part of the town rather than a separate destination. Its strongest appeal comes from swimming beneath the church, watching boats move across the harbour and stepping directly from the shore into one of the Costa Brava's most distinctive villages.
