Playa de l'Almadrava

The beach is relaxed and well suited to a full day beside the water. Families favour the central sand, swimmers use the sheltered-looking bay and paddle craft often appear when conditions are calm. Summer becomes busy, but the beach is wide enough to retain a more spacious feeling than the smaller coves farther east.

Restaurants and seasonal services are close without forming a dense resort promenade. The sea is often gentler than on the outer Cap de Creus coast, although easterly swell and wind can still create waves. Bathing flags and marked boat channels should always be respected.

L'Almadrava, also known as Canyelles Grosses, is a broad sandy bay east of Roses beneath the first hills of Cap de Creus. Fine pale sand, generally shallow-looking water and a residential backdrop make it one of the municipality's most comfortable family beaches.

Roses is the main anchor, with its fishing port, long promenade and historic citadel west of the beach. The bay has been used since antiquity, and the Ciutadella brings together Greek, Roman, medieval and later remains within one major archaeological site.

L'Almadrava also marks the transition from Roses' urban beaches to the rockier coastline of Cap de Creus. Canyelles Petites lies closer to town, while the road and coastal paths continue east towards natural coves.

The beach forms a generous curve between low rocky headlands. Houses climb the green slopes behind, but the surrounding hills remain visible and prevent the bay from feeling completely urban. The shore faces south across the wide Bay of Roses.

Fine sand and a gradual-looking waterline make the beach visually soft, while rock around the edges offers interest for snorkelling in calm weather. Boats commonly anchor offshore during summer, so swimmers should remain inside designated areas.

Morning and midday light reach the bay strongly, and the hills begin to cast more shade near the edges later in the day. L'Almadrava's appeal comes from balance: easy access and useful services combined with a clear sense that the wilder Cap de Creus landscape begins immediately beyond the beach.
