About Playa de Santa Margarida-Salatar

The Vibe

The atmosphere is international, family-oriented and more resort-like than the old centre of Roses. Visitors move between the beach, promenade, accommodation and canal-side restaurants, while sailing and water-sport activity add colour offshore. The long sand allows room for games, walking and relaxed swimming when conditions are suitable.

Salatar provides a transition from central Roses, while Santa Margarida feels more closely tied to the marina and canal development. The sea often appears calm in summer, but afternoon breeze can create short waves. Bathers should keep clear of marked craft channels and follow lifeguard flags.

The Setting

About

Santa Margarida-Salatar is the broad eastern bathing sector of Roses' main urban shoreline. Fine sand runs in front of hotels, apartments and the canal district of Santa Margarida, while the open Bay of Roses provides a wide horizon and generally easy access to the water.

The Local Anchor

Santa Margarida's navigable canals are the defining local feature. Boats moor beside apartments and villas, giving the district a different character from the fishing port and historic streets farther west.

Central Roses remains within walking distance along the promenade. The Ciutadella, fishing harbour and old town provide the cultural and maritime context that the modern resort district lacks on its own.

The Landscape

The beach forms part of the enormous sandy curve of the Bay of Roses. The horizon opens towards the Emporda plain and distant mountains, while the coast continues south towards Empuriabrava and the wetlands around the Aiguamolls.

The backdrop is developed and level, with palms, promenade and buildings replacing the rocky slopes found east of Roses. At the waterline, however, the sense of space is considerable because the bay is so wide.

Wind direction matters more than enclosure here. Calm mornings can bring smooth shallow water, while later breeze adds texture and attracts sailing activity. Santa Margarida-Salatar is best understood as a spacious resort beach integrated with a marina district, not as a secluded Costa Brava cove. Evening walks are especially easy and rewarding.
