About Playa Lourido - Poio

The Vibe

Lourido feels spacious, easy-going and closely connected to everyday local life. Walkers, runners, families and regular swimmers use the waterfront, while summer brings a fuller beach atmosphere. Its length allows busier access points and quieter sections to coexist.

The beach is well suited to a combined visit: time by the water, a promenade walk and a meal or drink nearby. The inner-ria setting usually produces gentler conditions than the Atlantic coast, but the shore is tidal and the usable width changes considerably through the day.

The Setting

About

Lourido, also known locally as A Polvoreira or O Polvorin, is a long sheltered beach near Pontevedra at the eastern end of Poio's coastline. Fine pale sand follows the inner Ria de Pontevedra, with a broad promenade, residential areas and views towards Tambo Island.

The Local Anchor

Pontevedra is the main urban anchor. The historic city lies only a short distance east, linked to Poio across the Ria de Pontevedra. Its old quarter, riverside walks and markets provide a strong contrast to the open shoreline.

Closer to the beach, San Salvador de Poio and the Monastery of Poio add local identity. The monastery's church, cloisters and enormous stone granary reflect the area's religious and agricultural history. Lourido therefore sits between city, parish and estuary rather than functioning as a separate resort.

The Landscape

The beach extends for about 700 metres and has fine sand in a sheltered, gently curving setting. Wooden access routes and the promenade run behind much of the shore, making the landscape easy to explore on foot.

At low tide, the intertidal area becomes broad and shallow-looking, and sandbanks may appear beyond the main waterline. Higher water narrows the beach and brings the ria closer to the promenade. Local winds can also expose the shore, and the wider Lourido area is sometimes used for wind-powered water sports.

Tambo Island provides the most recognisable focal point across the water. Beyond it, wooded hills and the outer ria layer the horizon. Lourido's appeal comes from scale and accessibility: a long estuary beach where the natural movement of the tide remains visible beside one of Galicia's most attractive small cities.
