Playa Cala Cerrada

The cove feels sheltered and compact, with shallow water and a curved shore contained by eroded headlands. Families are drawn to the protected shape, and the small beach can become crowded quickly during summer because there is limited room between the water and cliffs.

Visitors usually come for the unusual setting rather than extensive facilities. The sandy centre is easy to recognise, while rockier edges invite careful exploration when conditions are suitable. Arriving outside peak hours gives a better sense of the cove's form and reduces pressure on the narrow access and parking areas.

Cala Cerrada, commonly called Playa de los Cocedores, lies at the eastern end of Almeria beside the provincial boundary with Murcia. Its enclosed natural pool, ochre cliffs and old esparto-cooking hollows make it one of the most distinctive small coves around San Juan de los Terreros.

The name Los Cocedores refers to the natural and excavated hollows once used to soak and process esparto grass during the early twentieth century. These rounded cavities remain visible in the sandstone and are an important reminder of the practical industries that once depended on the coast.

San Juan de los Terreros is the nearest settlement for food and services. Its castle and offshore islands provide the wider historical and natural context, while the nearby Murcia coast continues immediately beyond the cove.

Cala Cerrada is roughly 150 to 270 metres across depending on how the protected bathing area is measured. Pale sand and clear shallows occupy a bowl-like inlet, with soft sandstone cliffs curving around the sides. Erosion has created caves, niches and rounded surfaces in warm ochre tones.

The enclosed water and sculpted rock give the beach the appearance of a natural swimming pool, but the setting remains exposed to weather from the open Mediterranean beyond the headlands. Sparse vegetation grows above the cliffs, and there is little urban development in the immediate view. The cove's identity comes from geology and history together: an eroded coastal basin shaped by the sea and later adapted for processing esparto.
