Playa Chilchez

Chilches feels local, spacious and unhurried. Families and residents use the principal access areas, walkers follow the waterline towards Benajarafe and anglers favour the quieter sections away from seasonal services. The beach rarely develops the concentrated resort atmosphere found at Torre del Mar.

The shore combines dark sand, gravel and occasional stones. Mediterranean wind can create moderate waves, and recent storms may alter the width and profile of the beach. Facilities are available around recognised entrances, but the long frontage includes simpler stretches where visitors should bring what they need.

Playa Chilches forms the westernmost beach of Velez-Malaga municipality, close to the boundary with Rincon de la Victoria. Its dark sand, low-density residential backdrop and quieter atmosphere make it a useful alternative to the busier urban beaches farther east.

Chilches village lies inland above the coastal settlement, preserving the traditional separation between an older Axarquia village and its modern seaside district. The nearby Torre de Chilches formed part of the watchtower network used to warn communities of maritime raids.

Benajarafe lies east, while Rincon de la Victoria's Los Rubios coast begins farther west. Chiringuitos serve grilled fish, sardine espetos, fried seafood and rice dishes, maintaining a strong Malaga coastal identity.

Dark sand and gravel form a long, open shoreline below low housing, vegetation, the coastal road and occasional undeveloped plots. There is no continuous high-rise promenade, so the beach and horizon remain visually dominant.

Eastward, the coast leads into Benajarafe's residential frontage. Westward, it approaches the municipal boundary and Los Rubios. Inland, dry hills and cultivated slopes rise behind the narrow coastal plain. Chilches is defined by edge and transition: the final Velez-Malaga beach meeting a neighbouring municipality along one uninterrupted Mediterranean shore. The beach is long enough for the station area and the quieter eastern stretches to feel separate. Roadside access is straightforward at recognised points, but shade remains limited once visitors reach the open sand. The village coast remains noticeably calm outside peak weekends.
