Altea becomes busy in summer, but its identity is not limited to the beach. The old town, galleries, marinas and hillside streets create a slower pattern of use throughout the day. Altea lies between the Mediterranean and the mountain ridge of Sierra Bernia. The coast is broken into beaches and coves by rocky points, harbour structures and the mouth of local watercourses. Offshore, the small islet near La Olla adds a clear visual reference.

The shoreline is generally narrow compared with the broad sandy bays farther south. Pebbles, pale rock, blue water and the rising white town create the main composition. At Mascarat, cliffs and marina development make the coast feel more enclosed and dramatic than the open frontage around La Roda.
