Playa de la Roda

La Roda is sociable, accessible in character and active throughout much of the year. Morning walkers and cyclists use the promenade, residents stop for a swim and summer visitors move easily between the shore and nearby terraces. The atmosphere is lively without the scale or high-rise intensity associated with larger Costa Blanca resorts. The level route also helps visitors who prefer avoiding the old town's steep lanes.

The beach is composed of rounded stones rather than sand, so suitable footwear improves comfort and stability. The seabed can deepen more firmly than a shallow sandy strand, and waves make the return across loose pebbles harder. Flags and seasonal safety arrangements should guide every swim.

Playa de la Roda is Altea's principal central beach, a long pebble-and-gravel shore directly below the promenade and lower town. Its easy relationship with restaurants, the fishing harbour and the climb to the old town makes it the municipality's most recognisable urban beach.

Altea's old town rises immediately inland, culminating in the church of Nuestra Senora del Consuelo with its blue-and-white tiled domes. The steep streets, viewpoints and white houses provide the cultural counterpoint to the level promenade below.

At the southern end are the fishing port and Club Nautico, while L'Espigo and the Algar River lie to the north. The seafront contains restaurants and former maritime buildings, linking present-day tourism with Altea's fishing history and long reputation as a home for artists and craftspeople.

La Roda forms a broad arc of pale pebbles along Altea Bay. A palm-lined promenade follows the beach, with low white development stepping upward towards the historic centre rather than blocking it completely.

Serra Gelada dominates the southern view, and the wider bay opens north towards Cap Negret and Mascarat. Boats moving from the harbour add colour offshore. The beach's appeal lies in this complete Altea composition: textured stone at the waterline, a walkable seafront, masts and fishing craft, then the old town climbing above.
