About Playa de la Barreta

The Vibe

Barreta feels sheltered and convenient, with the marina bringing restaurants, boats and residential activity close to the water. It works well for a short swim or a quieter pause away from Altea's central promenade, although the limited shoreline can become busy when nearby accommodation is full. Early visits usually feel notably calmer and less compressed.

The surface is stony and the water deepens around rock, making footwear and careful entry useful. Swimmers must keep away from harbour channels and should not cross towards rocky features without assessing waves and boat movement. Snorkelling can be rewarding in calm conditions, but visibility and safety vary from day to day.

The Setting

About

Playa de la Barreta is a small pebble-and-gravel beach beside Marina Greenwich on Altea's northern coast. It lies close to Mascarat but has its own compact identity, shaped by the harbour, nearby rock and the small offshore reef that gives the beach its name.

The Local Anchor

Marina Greenwich, also called Puerto Deportivo Luis Campomanes, is the unmistakable local anchor. Its harbour basin, masts and waterfront businesses separate Barreta from the more open natural shoreline around Solsida and from the neighbouring Mascarat beach.

The name Barreta refers to a small stone reef near the coast. Farther inland, the Mascarat gorge carries road and rail routes through the narrow mountain corridor towards Calp, adding a dramatic engineered backdrop to the otherwise intimate beach setting.

The Landscape

The beach occupies a short curve of pale pebbles between marina structures and rocky coast. Low residential buildings rise behind, while steep mountain slopes become more prominent towards Mascarat. The harbour reduces the sense of exposure but also keeps nautical activity constantly visible.

Views south extend across Altea Bay towards Serra Gelada, while the north is closed by rugged headlands. Barreta's landscape is compact and layered: pebble shore, stone reef, moored boats and mountain walls all close together. It is not a wilderness cove, yet it retains more texture and enclosure than the central town beaches.
