Playa del Mascarat

Mascarat feels like a small coastal enclave shaped by the marina, apartment terraces and surrounding cliffs. Visitors come for swimming, careful snorkelling and a quieter day on the stones, while boats entering or leaving the harbour bring regular movement to the view. It is peaceful rather than isolated, with development close by but little sense of a conventional town promenade. Even outside summer, the enclosed mountain setting gives the shore a distinctive scale.

The beach is made of pebbles and rounded stones, and the water can become deep relatively quickly. Footwear is useful, and swimmers must remain outside navigation areas. Rocky margins may look inviting for exploration, but swell, slippery surfaces and boat wash make cautious decisions essential.

Playa del Mascarat is a pebble beach on Altea's far northern coast, beside Marina Greenwich and below the steep approaches to the Mascarat gorge. Its mountain-backed setting and clear-looking water create a more dramatic atmosphere than the open urban beaches around central Altea.

Marina Greenwich, also known locally as Puerto Deportivo Luis Campomanes, is the immediate landmark. Its unusual position close to the Greenwich meridian inspired the modern name, while restaurants and nautical services cluster around the harbour basin.

Inland, road and rail routes pass through the narrow Mascarat corridor between coastal cliffs and the Sierra de Bernia system. Historic tunnels and the gorge explain why this section of coast feels compressed and engineered compared with the broad plain around Altea Bay.

Pale pebbles occupy a short shoreline framed by harbour structures, low rock and steep mountain slopes. Nearby Cala de la Barra Grande and the Barreta sector form separate small bathing places, so the names should not be treated as interchangeable.

The view south opens towards Altea Bay and Serra Gelada, while the northern side is enclosed by the rugged coast towards Calp. Mascarat's defining landscape is vertical: stone beach below, marina at water level, then roads, tunnels and mountains rising abruptly behind.
