Playa de Cavain

This is a practical family beach with room for walking, games and long summer days. The sections near the main access and leisure areas can become busy, while the eastern end usually feels more open. The width of the sand helps the beach absorb crowds better than many Maresme town beaches.

Water conditions are often manageable, but the Mediterranean can still produce a steep shore break and sudden roughness after wind or storms. Visitors should follow flags and take care where streams meet the sea, especially after heavy rain.

El Cavaio is the largest beach in Arenys de Mar, stretching east from the harbour towards the boundary with Canet de Mar. Around one kilometre long and unusually broad, it provides a spacious alternative to the smaller beaches close to the old town. Its golden, relatively coarse sand is backed by paths and naturalised areas rather than a dense resort frontage.

Arenys de Mar's fishing port is the immediate landmark at the western end. Boats, auction activity and seafood restaurants give the town a strong working identity, while the old centre rises inland around the Riera and parish church.

The beach is sometimes called the Third Beach by local residents because it lies beyond the port from the central shoreline. Canet de Mar begins at the eastern side, so a walk along the sand reveals how closely the two coastal towns are connected.

El Cavaio extends between the harbour breakwater and the municipal boundary. Since the late 2000s, parts of the rear beach have been naturalised, with green areas, recovered stream mouths and protected sandy zones supporting coastal plants and wildlife.

The broad sand creates a strong sense of openness. At lower water, the walking surface becomes firmer and the beach appears even larger; higher water leaves ample upper shore in most sections. Low dunes and vegetation soften the transport corridor behind.

Two small Civil War defensive structures survive near the wider Cavaio shoreline, reminders that this open coast has also held strategic importance. Today, the defining view is simpler: harbour to the west, Canet to the east and a long Mediterranean horizon ahead.
