Playa de la Murtra

The mood is understated. La Murtra attracts local families, couples and people willing to walk a little farther from the centre, but it rarely feels like a resort beach. The available space changes with weather and sand movement, and rocky sections give the shore a more rugged appearance.

The sea faces open Mediterranean conditions. Wind can build short waves, while submerged rock near the margins requires attention. Swimmers should follow flags and use the central sandy area rather than entering beside uncertain rocky edges.

La Murtra is one of the more natural beaches on the western side of Sant Pol de Mar. It lies below the coastal road and railway, where golden sand, rock and low vegetation form a quieter shoreline than the central town beaches. The setting suits visitors who prefer open space and a less formal beach atmosphere.

Sant Pol de Mar provides the cultural anchor. The village rises steeply behind the railway, with white houses, narrow streets and the church of Sant Jaume forming a compact coastal settlement. The hermitage of Sant Pau stands above the town and is one of the most recognisable viewpoints along this part of the Maresme.

Fishing and food remain important to Sant Pol's identity. The central Platja de les Barques recalls the boats once drawn onto the sand, while restaurants and seasonal beach establishments continue the close connection between village life and the sea.

La Murtra belongs to a sequence of beaches and rocky breaks west of the town centre. The railway and N-II remain visible behind the shore, but the natural edges, coarse sand and green slopes soften the infrastructure.

At lower water and after calm periods, the beach may offer a broader walking surface. Following storms, rock and steeper banks can become more prominent. Roques Blanques lies farther west, while Can Villar and central Sant Pol are reached in the opposite direction.

The beach is best appreciated as part of a coastal walk rather than as an isolated destination. Its character comes from the meeting of open sea, rougher sand, railway engineering and the greener land that survives between Sant Pol and the neighbouring Maresme towns.
