Playa de Gran

This is Calella at its most energetic. Families, swimmers, beach-sports players and holidaymakers fill the central sections in summer, and seasonal beach bars add music and evening activity. The beach is long enough to offer quieter space towards its ends, especially early in the day.

Platja Gran is practical for a full beach day because the town is immediately behind it. The coarse sand drains quickly but can feel hot and the entry into the water may deepen faster than on a shallow resort beach. Waves vary with wind and swell, so flags should always guide swimming.

Platja Gran is Calella's central and largest beach, extending along the town's main seafront beneath the railway and promenade. Its long band of coarse golden sand places visitors close to hotels, restaurants and the old centre while maintaining an uninterrupted Mediterranean horizon.

Calella's old centre lies a few streets inland, with the church of Santa Maria, pedestrian shopping streets and restaurants serving the holiday town. Passeig Manuel Puigvert provides a shaded promenade between the railway and beach, lined with trees and used for local events.

To the south, Calella's lighthouse rises above the coast and provides the most recognisable landmark. The remains of the old telegraph towers, known as Les Torretes, stand nearby on the hillside. Together they connect the busy beach with a more rugged headland landscape.

Platja Gran forms a broad, mostly straight urban shore. The R1 railway runs close behind, a defining feature of the Maresme coast, while palms and promenade trees soften the built frontage.

The beach faces southeast, catching bright morning light and open views across the Mediterranean. At lower water, firm sand near the edge creates an excellent walking route; at higher water, the active zone shifts closer to the promenade. Storms can produce a strong shore break and reshape the upper beach.

Looking south reveals the headland and lighthouse, while the north opens towards Pineda de Mar. Platja Gran's strength is its scale: a substantial city beach that supports Calella's lively resort life without losing sight of the open sea.
