Playa de Les Roques

The coves appeal to visitors seeking a quieter setting and a stronger sense of natural coastline. Space is limited, access involves paths and steps, and the shore can feel full quickly in summer. The reward is a more intimate relationship with the water and the rocky headland.

Les Roques suits confident beachgoers who are comfortable carrying what they need and judging changing conditions. The coves may appear sheltered, but swell can wrap around the rocks and reduce safe dry space. Visitors should avoid climbing slippery stone and should watch the tide before settling close to the edges.

Les Roques is Calella's smaller and more rugged beach area, formed by narrow sandy coves beneath the headland southeast of the town centre. Rock, coarse golden sand and steep green slopes replace the broad promenade setting of Platja Gran, creating a more secluded atmosphere within walking distance of Calella.

Calella's lighthouse stands above the coast and is the defining landmark. Built on the headland, it marks the transition from the town's long urban beaches to the broken coves of Les Roques. Nearby Les Torretes, the remains of nineteenth-century optical telegraph towers, add another historic viewpoint.

The town centre remains close enough for restaurants, shops and rail connections, but the headland creates a psychological break from the resort frontage. A coastal walk here reveals a less developed side of Calella and links naturally with viewpoints over the Maresme.

Les Roques consists of small coves separated by rock outcrops at the foot of wooded slopes. The beaches are narrow, with mixed sand and stone, and their usable area changes significantly with tide and wave conditions.

The Mediterranean appears deeper and more enclosed from this lower position. Rock walls catch afternoon shade, while the lighthouse remains visible above parts of the route. Clear, settled days can reveal attractive water around the rocky margins, though visibility and calm should never be assumed.

The landscape is more dramatic than convenient. Access, limited space and exposure are part of the experience. Les Roques offers Calella's clearest contrast: a rugged sequence of coves only a short distance from the broad, busy sands of the town.
