About Playa de Sant Simn

The Vibe

Sant Simo feels more spacious and less formal than Varador or Callao. Walkers, cyclists, anglers and families use the broad shoreline, while the greater distance from the port gives the beach a more open coastal atmosphere. It can still become busy in summer, particularly near the main access points.

The sea is fully exposed to changing Mediterranean conditions. Wind can build waves quickly, and the long, straight shore can develop currents that are not obvious from dry sand. Visitors should use supervised areas when available and treat quieter sections with the same care as the central beach.

The Setting

About

Platja de Sant Simo forms the eastern end of Mataro's main bathing coast. It is the city's longest and most open beach sector, extending beyond the denser seafront towards the Riera de Sant Simo and the agricultural landscape on Mataro's outskirts.

The Local Anchor

The small hermitage of Sant Simo gives the area its name and provides a historic reference away from the sand. The neighbourhood and riera mark the transition between the urban seafront and Les Cinc Senies, Mataro's surviving agricultural plain.

This farming landscape is an important part of the city's identity. Vegetable plots, tracks and old rural properties sit close to a coastline that otherwise appears thoroughly urban, creating a rare meeting of beach and cultivated land.

The Landscape

Sant Simo is a long band of coarse golden sand with an open horizon and few natural barriers. The Riera de Sant Simo reaches the coast here, and after heavy rain the channel and water quality near freshwater outlets require extra attention.

Looking west, the beaches of Callao and Varador lead towards Mataro's port and city centre. Eastward, development thins and the coast begins to feel less enclosed.

The beach's value lies in this gradual change and the extra sense of space it provides. It remains accessible from a large city, yet the eastern sections offer wider skies, fewer buildings and a clearer sense of the Maresme shoreline continuing beyond Mataro.
