About Playa de Sant Joan

The Vibe

San Juan combines family bathing, sport and year-round neighbourhood life. Volleyball courts, running routes, cafes and seasonal beach services create activity across a wide area, while the length of the shore allows visitors to move beyond the busiest entrances. Early mornings attract walkers and exercisers before the main beach crowd develops.

The seabed generally shelves gradually, but this remains an open Mediterranean beach. Flags, lifeguard instructions and marked channels should guide swimming, especially when wind or swell changes the water. The exposed sand offers little natural shade, so long stays require proper sun protection and drinking water.

The Setting

About

Playa de San Juan is Alicante's principal long sandy beach, extending northeast from Cabo de la Huerta towards the boundary with El Campello. Fine pale-gold sand, a broad promenade and extensive transport links make it one of the city's most spacious and heavily used waterfronts throughout the year.

The Local Anchor

The Alicante tram links the beach district with the city centre and neighbouring coastal towns, making San Juan accessible without relying entirely on a car. Inland, the historic Torres de la Huerta survive among modern development, recalling the agricultural estates and defensive network that once characterised Alicante's huerta.

La Marjal floodable park is another important local feature. Designed to hold storm water and reduce flooding around the beach district, it combines drainage infrastructure with paths, planting and public space. It shows how the modern neighbourhood manages the risks of intense Mediterranean rainfall.

The Landscape

The Alicante section runs for roughly three kilometres before the sand continues as Muchavista in El Campello. A deep, broad beach faces open water, backed by a promenade, palms, apartments and low commercial buildings.

Cabo de la Huerta closes the southwestern view, while the coastline stretches almost uninterrupted to the northeast. The landscape is urban but generous in scale: long sightlines, extensive sand and enough width for sport and quieter use to coexist. Its identity comes from continuity rather than cliffs, coves or historic harbour scenery.
