Playa la Barraca-el Portitxol

Portitxol feels scenic and enclosed, but it is no longer a secret beach. Summer demand is high, especially near the easiest access and waterfront buildings, so arriving early and checking local access arrangements is sensible. Outside peak hours, the cove settles into a quieter rhythm of swimming, kayaking and meals overlooking the water.

The shore is made of gravel, boulders and pebbles rather than fine sand. Beach shoes help on land and at the waterline, while the rocky margins require care in swell. The bay attracts snorkellers and divers when conditions are suitable, although boats, marked channels and changing sea conditions must remain part of any decision to enter.

Cala Barraca, better known as Portitxol, is a gravel-and-pebble cove on Xabia's rugged southern coast between Cap Prim and Cap Negre. White waterfront houses, steep wooded slopes and the island of Portitxol give the bay one of the municipality's most recognisable coastal settings.

Portitxol Island lies directly offshore and is about 300 metres long. It has botanical and archaeological interest and provides the cove with its strongest landmark. The island should be appreciated as part of a sensitive coastal environment rather than simply as a target for an unsupervised swim.

The Creu del Portitxol viewpoint stands above the approach and offers a wider view across the bay. Access also comes from the Cabo de la Nao road. The cove's small houses and traditional shoreline image link the place with Xabia's maritime identity, even though present-day use is largely recreational.

Grey and yellow cliffs, pine-covered slopes and clear Mediterranean water create strong contrasts around the cove. Cap Prim and the Portitxol area include protected flora microreserves, reflecting the ecological value of the vegetation above and beside the shore.

The bay narrows the horizon around the island, unlike the open sweep of Primer Muntanyar. Pebbles continue beneath the water, and submerged rock supports varied marine life in calm conditions. Portitxol's lasting impression comes from the complete scene: island, white houses, wooded headlands and a compact stone beach held between them.
